Morocco’s Three Atlas Ranges

Morocco’s Atlas Mountains consist of three main ranges: the High Atlas, Middle Atlas, and Anti-Atlas. Each offers a distinct landscape, from the towering peaks and deep valleys of the High Atlas to the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas and the rocky, arid terrain of the Anti-Atlas.

Toubkal— North Africa’s Highest Peak

At 4,167 metres above sea level, Mount Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa. Located in the High Atlas, it is a major destination for trekking and mountaineering. The nearby village of Imlil serves as the main starting point for many treks, with mountain trails, guesthouses, and a glimpse into traditional Amazigh life.

Tizi n’Tichka — High Atlas Mountain Pass

Tizi n’Tichka Pass reaches an elevation of 2,260 metres in the High Atlas Mountains, linking Marrakech with Ouarzazate along one of Morocco’s most scenic mountain routes. The road winds through rugged peaks, deep valleys, and traditional villages, offering striking views along the way. It is also a key route for travelers exploring southern Morocco and continuing towards the Sahara Desert.

Hiking in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains offer a wide range of hiking routes, from the valleys of Ourika and Aït Bouguemez to the high-altitude trails around Imlil and Toubkal. Walks vary from easy village trails to demanding mountain ascents, with spring and autumn generally offering the most favourable conditions.
